When to go

The right month.

November to March is the only sensible window β€” 25Β°C days, cool evenings, desert nights you can sit out in. April warms quickly. May to September the city retreats indoors; outdoor pools become bathwater and walking five minutes is uncomfortable.

Getting in & around

From the airport, onward.

Dubai International (DXB) and Al Maktoum (DWC) are the two airports β€” confirm which one your flight uses, they are an hour apart. The metro is fast, cheap, and reaches the Mall, Marina and Downtown. Careem and Uber are the standard taxis; meters are honest. The water taxis (abras) across Dubai Creek are AED 1 and still one of the loveliest 5-minute rides in the city.

Where to stay

Three neighbourhoods, three personalities.

  • Downtown

Burj Khalifa, the Fountain, mall walking distance β€” the classic first stay.

  • Dubai Marina / JBR

Beachfront, evening promenade, easier for families.

  • Al Fahidi (Bur Dubai)

Restored heritage district along the creek β€” the city's quieter, older self.

Eat & drink

What to order, and where.

  • Manakish & karak chai

Operation Falafel or any neighbourhood bakery β€” the Emirati breakfast that fuels the city.

  • Slow-cooked lamb ouzi

Al Khayma at Madinat Jumeirah for the traditional Emirati menu.

  • Hawker-style across SAL

Time Out Market in Souk Al Bahar gathers 17 of the city's best kitchens under one roof.

Don't miss

The dossier.

  • Burj Khalifa at sunset

Book the 'At the Top SKY' (148th floor) timed for 30 minutes before sunset.

  • Desert dune-camp evening

Choose a small operator (Platinum Heritage) over a 200-vehicle convoy.

  • Old Dubai walking afternoon

Abra across the creek, gold and spice souks, lunch at Arabian Tea House.

  • Museum of the Future

The torus on Sheikh Zayed Road β€” book a 10:00 slot weeks in advance.

Insider tips

What our advisors would tell you.

  1. 01

Friday is the local weekend brunch institution; book Thursday-for-Friday lunch slots two weeks out.

  2. 02

Dress modestly in malls and souks β€” knees and shoulders covered. Beaches and pools are fine in swimwear.

  3. 03

Alcohol is licensed only inside hotels, restaurants and clubs. Do not drink in public.

  4. 04

Public displays of affection are limited to handholding for married couples; restraint is appreciated.

  5. 05

Tipping: 10–15% in restaurants if service isn't included; AED 5–10 for porters and drivers.

  6. 06

Friday prayers (around 12:30) close many smaller shops for 1–2 hours.

Health & safety

One of the safest cities in the world. The risks are sun, dehydration and road speed β€” UAE highways are fast, seat belts in every seat are mandatory and fines for phone use are heavy.
