An island with two monsoons. Choose the right coast for the month you're flying and Sri Lanka rewards you with the best two weeks in South Asia.
Sri Lanka has two monsoons rotating around the island. December to March: dry west and south (Colombo, Galle, the south coast beaches, tea country). May to September: dry east (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay). April and October are inter-monsoon β short, dramatic afternoon showers and the lowest hotel rates.
Bandaranaike International (CMB), 30 km north of Colombo. Distances look short on the map but roads are slow β budget 4 hours Colombo to Galle, 5 hours Galle to Yala. The hill-country train (Kandy β Ella) is the famous one; book the second-class observation carriage 30 days out, sit on the right Kandy-bound for the best views.
Dutch ramparts, boutique villas inside the walls β base for the south coast.
Cool nights, waterfalls, Little Adam's Peak β the tea-country anchor.
For the safari side β Leopard Trails or Wild Coast Tented Lodge.
Five small curries, sambol, pappadum β Lucky's in Ella, or any village home-cooked spread.
Chopped flatbread stir-fry, audible from a block away β Pilawoos in Colombo.
Bowl-shaped rice pancakes with egg in the centre β breakfast in any guesthouse.
Climb at opening (07:00) to beat the heat and the tour buses.
Two full-day game drives; the southern park has the highest leopard density in Asia.
Lighthouse, the ramparts, Pedlar's Inn for dinner.
Blue whales offshore DecβApr; choose an operator that follows the marine code.
If you're there in late July / August β the temple procession is unmatched.
Tuk-tuks use meters in Colombo (insist) and negotiation elsewhere. PickMe is the app that solves both.
Remove shoes and hats at every Buddhist site; cover shoulders and knees.
Never take a selfie with your back to a Buddha statue β it's a deportable offence in some districts.
Tap water is not potable. Bottled or filtered only.
Tipping: 10% in restaurants if not included; 100β500 LKR for hotel staff and drivers per service.
ATMs are reliable in cities; carry cash for the south and the tea country.
Sri Lanka is broadly safe and the war ended in 2009. The real risks are road traffic, sun exposure on safaris and dengue in the wet season. Solo female travellers report it as one of the easier countries in South Asia.
